For years, Facebook has allowed users to be ‘Friends’ with eachother but to simultaneously not follow their posts. This feature is useful if you’re not quite ready to unfriend a person but you don’t feel like seeing their posts on your news feed. It’s also useful if someone posts way too often and you don’t want their posts taking up so much space, that you have to carefully filter through posts to find other content. The time has finally come where you’re able to do the same on Instagram!
Everyone is aware of Instagram’s highly unpopular algorithm, which shows users posts out of chronological order. This means that you can be bombarded with a particular users posts on your news feed, even if their posts are a few days old. This is especially annoying if you’re not particularly interested in this user and their posts, and it can make you want to unfollow them. Instagram has finally offered a solution to this dilemma where you can easily mute users who posts you don’t want to show up on your news feed. You can even mute their stories if you don’t want them to show up at the top of your feed.
The first step is waiting for a user’s post to show up on your feed. From there, click the 3 dots at the top right of the screen.
You can choose to simply ‘Mute’ the account’s posts or mute both the posts and the account’s stories. When you mute an account’s posts, they will no longer show up on your feed. You can, however, visit the account’s profile in order to see all of users photos. In other words, you won’t be blocking yourself from seeing a persons photos on their account altogether. If you mute an account’s stories, they won’t show up at the top of your feed anymore.
Instagram now allows you to also visit a person’s profile directly and Mute their posts.
Just head over to the user’s page and click the 3 dots at the top right of their profile. From there, you can Mute their posts.
To reverse this action, click the 3 dots at the top right of the user’s profile again. Click Mute, and then this option will pop up:
From here you can Unmute Posts and Stories.
How Businesses Can Take Advantage of This New Feature
As a business, you may not want to see all of the posts that your followers upload, but you also need to be following customers. In fact, it could even be counterproductive to have all of those posts in your feed. With Instagram now allowing you to mute user posts, you can use this to your advantage. Mute posts from customers who you don’t plan on reguarly interacting with. This can clean up your feed and allow you to only see posts from users that you plan on interacting with.
